High in the mountains of Irak, Iran and eastern Trukey, the stony hillsides are dotted with clumps of this delightful little tulip. The flowers open wide in sunshine in a range of colours from light pink to dark purple but always with a yellow heart.
This gem flowers when most of its relatives are still sleeping. The stems are short, the leaves are narrow and lie upon the ground. Tuck them away in small sunny corners in the garden or grow them in pots. Very early and very hardy. Height 10cm.
Suggestion: mingle at planting time with Ipheion uniflorum for a delightful early spring scene.
