Arisaema (cobra lily)

Plant tubers in the spring, setting them at least 10-15cm deep in fairly moist, humus-rich soil in light shade. They need to be planted deep because the roots grow from the top of the tuber, not the bottom. When it is not clear which side of the tuber is up, plant it on its side. Winter hardy in Holland; in colder regions, mulch with dry leaves or compost before winter.

Arisaemas look handsome in pots as well, provided they are big and deep. Use a good potting soil rich in organic material with sand added for good drainage. Water freely once growth starts and feed with a general fertilizer twice a year. In areas with harsh winters, move pot indoors before frost and allow the plant to rest slightly moist during the cold months. Height: 30-40cm.
