Zantedeschia

A South African native that can be used as a potted plant (3 tubers fill a 25-30cm pot) or as a tender bulb for the sunny border. Where summers are very hot, they seem to do better in half shade. Use well drained soil high in organic matter. In the garden plant tubers 8cm deep and 20cm apart; the smooth part of the tuber facing down with the pale growing tips pointing up. Keep potted plants moist at all times while the plant is in active growth during spring and summer. To ensure flowers for years to come, feed with a general fertilizer while they are in growth. Winter hardy in mildly cold areas (southern England, the south of France). Further north, tubers should be lifted or grown in pots that can be taken indoors when the plants go dormant in autumn.
