Tigridia (Mexican shell flower)

This Mexican native prefers a sunny, protective location. In colder regions hold off planting until the soil has warmed. Grow them in the border (8cm deep, 10cm apart) or in pots (10 bulbs fill a 20cm pot). Water well during dry spells but avoid excessive moisture until sprouts have developed.

Flowers are not suitable for cutting. In Holland and Britain the bulbs will survive winters outdoor with a mulch of chipped wood, leaf mould or dry leaves. In colder areas treat bulbs as annuals or store them inside over winter. Potted bulbs should be allowed to dry out and moved into a frost-free place until the following spring.
