Gladiolus, small-flowered

They grow best in full sun but will tolerate light shade for part of the day. In the border plant corms about 10cm deep and 12cm apart. With their upright leaves the plants take up little space, so room can be found almost anywhere. They also make wonderful container plants (10 bulbs fill a 20cm pot) bringing their beauty close to the garden seat. Water well during warm days.

Natives of high and cool regions, these corms will survive winter outdoors in mildly cold regions (Holland and much of England) if given a warm, sheltered position. In colder areas a good mulch of dry leaves or shredded bark helps winter survival. Place potted plants indoors over winter and allow them to remain almost dry until next spring.
