Scadoxus (powder puff)
The bulbs are best grown in pots indoors (3 bulbs fill a 15-20cm pot). Plant shallowly in any good soil with about one-third of the bulb exposed. Water sparingly until growth starts. Then water regularly throughout growth and bloom. Give them bright light but not a sun-baked position.
The ornamental leaves develop fully after the flowers. In tropical regions the leaves are evergreen; in colder climates the plants usually go dormant in winter. Keep them growing as long as possible, holding back water when they turn yellow and go dormant. To encourage flowers in years to come, feed with a general houseplant fertilizer during growth. Allow the bulbs to rest in a cool, dry and frost-free spot for at least 4-5 months. Start bulbs up again by working in some fresh rich soil around the bulbs, disturbing the roots as little as possible. Place the pot in a warmer location and slowly resume watering.
