Iris hollandica
Depending on when you plant your bulbs, they will flower in either late spring or summer. Do not let the bulbs sit in the bag for a long time; it is best to plant them soon after you have purchased them, about 10cm deep and 12cm apart. As far as their culture goes, they love sunshine and shelter from wind but they will thrive in any garden soil provided it is not too dry. Dutch iris are also nice for cutting. When gathering flowers, leave as much foliage behind as you can and do not cut them before the first flower bud shows colour.
The bulbs can also be grown in large pots in a sunny, protected corner on the terrace or on the balcony. Remember to water them well when in growth. In Holland and colder regions the pots are best placed in a cool location indoors over winter. Garden grown bulbs are winter hardy in Holland with a protective mulch of dry leaves or leaf mould. Further north the bulbs should be lifted before winter or grow them in pots that can be taken inside.
