Galtonia (summer flowering hyacinth)
Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot in fertile, well-drained soil. They resent drought so take care they do not want for water during the growing season. The shoots emerge quite late in spring and they bloom in late summer. Because of their height (100cm), Galtonias are best planted towards the middle or back of the border among low growing plants or shrubs. Plant 15cm deep and 10-20cm apart.
The bulbs dislike to be moved and in regions with mildly cold winters (Holland, southern England and France) they should be given a protective mulch such as compost or wood chips. Farther north bulbs are best grown in pots (3 bulbs fill a 20-25cm pot) which can be stored cool and dry over winter.
