Gloriosa (climbing lily)
This climbing bulbous plant grows from long, finger-like tubers and is best treated as a potted plant indoors (1-3 bulbs fill a 20cm planter). If given warmth, its culture is relatively easy and it may bloom more than once a year. It can be started into growth at almost any season of the year. Tubers started in spring, usually bloom by late summer.
The long tuber should be placed flat with the eye 5cm below the surface. Use a rich compost with sand. Be sure this is moist but not wet and water sparingly until growth starts. They require at least half a day of sun. Plenty of water is needed when they are about to bloom. While growing, train shoots to follow any support upwards. Feed occasionally with a general houseplant fertilizer during growth. After flowering, when the foliage begins to die back, withhold water and let plant rest in a cool but frost-free place for at least three months.
