Fritillaria meleagris
Fritillaria meleagris
Fritillaria meleagris A native of northwest Europe where it grows in low-lying meadows along the side of woodlands and on river banks.
Known as Snake's Head, for before it opens the pointed flower bud resembles the head of a snake. This bulb is one of our most beautiful wild flowers.
In not-too-dry situations it nearly always endures and increases, the charming reptilian bells always provide an unforgetable display. Naturalize them in short grass under trees, in the lee of shrubs or in the border. Mid-spring flowering. Deer and rodent proof. Height 25cm.
Suggestion: Beautiful in uncut grass but equally at home in the undisturbed border where you could join them with Muscari, Puschkinia and Scilla, all sharing a preference for light shade and soils that never become bone dry.
