The winter aconite is an adventurous late winter flowering bulb that brings us the very first yellow flowers. As soon as it feels safe, up pushes the stem carrying a round golden ball which opens to a bright, buttercup-yellow flower above a frilly green collar. This variety is the best for naturalizing.

The charming leaves hang back a little until the flower is well developed. Naturalize them in shady places, preferably beneath deciduous trees and in soils that do not dry out too much in summer. Where happy, they self-sow freely and bright little colonies can spring up in the most unlikely places.

Suggestion: renowned for its ability to naturalize under deciduous trees. Cheer up the yellow carpets with tufts of Galanthus, their logical companions.
Suggestion: lovely also when joined by Chionodoxas, Crocus tomasinianus, Cyclamen, and Scilla.
