Very pretty, late spring blooming species from North America. It grows something over 30cm tall and bears sprays of many star-like pink flowers which are also fun for cutting. Despite its name it has several leaves which appear so early that they are sometimes nipped by late frost.
As the flowers wither, they become papery and last like charming ghosts of themselves long after the grassy leaves have disappeared. A hardy and easy to grow bulb that can handle almost any soil if given a sunny position. This plant is edible. The young foliage can be used in place of chives.
