This unique tulip is not definitely a true wild species but quite certainly a personality. First mentioned in 1 813 it is thought to have originated in Syria or Turkey. It is an example of the needle-shaped tulips prized by the Ottoman sultans during the late 16th century. In mid spring it holds eccentric red and yellow flowers with narrow twisted petals on 35cm tall stems.
It has won the name of Chinese Tulip because of the very long and narrow petals suggesting the finger nails of a Mandarin. These rare bulbs may be grown in pots where we can study their intricate beauty. In the garden they show best in a quiet sunny nook or corner. Height 35cm.
Suggestion: mix them in the border with the orange lily-flowered Tulip Ballerina for a unique display.
