A friendly and easy bulb producing intriguing, two-tone effect flowers in mid-spring. The top of the flower spike is tinged light blue, whereas the lower part is a much darker, inky, colour. In full bloom they look like grape hyacinths wearing bright blue bonnets. Voted flower of the year in on more than one occasion in both Holland and the UK.
An obedient plant, neat and tidy and growing where it is told. It commonly has only two leaves, one almost as broad as that of lily-of-the-valley. The stalk is tall, from 20-25cm, a jaunty species, making a bold show in the border in sun or light shade.
Suggestion: lovely in combination with sprightly mid-spring bulbs like Narcissus Baby Boomer and Hawera; likewise with the wild tulips Tulipa clusiana Lady Jane and T. sylvestris.
