It is quite obvious how this outrageously different allium got its name. When bloom starts in early summer the green tendrils or 'hairs' around the purple centres are still short and tidy. They grow quickly however, sprouting into a dramatic mad hairdo.
The 60cm stems grow from grass-like tufts of hollow leaves which wither at blooming time. For that reason it is best grown among other plants, bringing drama and structure to the border. The flowers remain a feature for a long time, turning into decorative seed heads after the flowers are gone.
Suggestion: great for naturalizing and a perfect subject for growing in long grass.
